It is deeply rooted in the tradition and the fabric of the Harvard and MIT communities with a long history of supporting student groups and initiatives. Position Overview

 

 

Position Title: Chief Operating Officer (COO)

Location: Cambridge, MA

Reports To: Chief Executive Officer (CEO)

 

The Harvard Cooperative Society (The Coop) is seeking a Chief Operating Officer (COO) to oversee and manage the organization’s strategic and operational functions. The COO will be responsible for ensuring operational excellence, optimizing efficiency, and driving strategic initiatives that support the Coop’s mission and growth. This is an opportunity to reimagine the legacy of The Coop, the world’s oldest and largest college bookstore, and make an impact on the community it supports.


This role includes managing the relationship with the COOP’s operating partner, overseeing the Coop’s real estate assets, and managing lease arrangements. Additionally, the COO will work closely with the Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) to execute and implement innovative retail activations, programming, and events that engage the Coop’s membership and the community. The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership skills, a deep understanding of retail management, and a commitment to serving the Harvard and MIT communities.

Key Responsibilities
1. Operational Leadership:

  • Oversee the daily operations of the Coop through effective management of the operating partner and management of all buildings and facilities to drive continued financial performance and stability.

  • Ensure that outsourced operations align with the Coop’s mission, standards and objectives.

  • Monitor performance metrics and implement strategies for continuous improvement.


2. Strategic Planning:

  • Collaborate with the CEO and senior management team to develop and implement the Coop’s strategic plan. Execute transformation strategy and vision.

  • Identify and pursue opportunities for growth and innovation in line with the Coop’s mission with a lens towards engaging and supporting members.


3. Financial Management:

  • Manage the Coop’s budget and financial performance, ensuring fiscal responsibility and profitability.

  • Analyze financial data and reports to identify trends, risks, and opportunities.

  • Work with the Controller to develop and monitor annual budgets, forecasts, and financial plans.


4. Human Resources:

  • Oversee talent acquisition, development, and retention strategies.

  • Ensure compliance with employment laws and regulations.


5. Customer Experience:

  • Ensure the highest level of customer service and satisfaction across all Coop locations and online platforms.

  • Work with the CMO to develop and implement initiatives to enhance the customer experience and drive membership engagement. Operationally execute events and programs.

  • Monitor customer feedback and address concerns promptly and effectively.

 

6. Technology and Innovation:

  • Leverage technology to streamline operations, improve efficiency, and enhance the customer experience.

  • Stay informed about industry trends and emerging technologies that could benefit the Coop.

  • Lead digital transformation initiatives to keep the Coop competitive and innovative.

 

7. Vendor Relationship Management:

  • Oversee the partnership with the COOP operating partner, ensuring alignment with the Coop’s goals and standards.

  • Collaborate with the operating partner to optimize operational success and address any issues or opportunities.

  • Monitor vendor performance and ensure contract compliance.

8. Real Estate and Lease Management:

  • Oversee the Coop’s real estate assets, including property management and lease arrangements.

  • Negotiate lease terms and manage relationships with landlords and property managers.

  • Develop and implement strategies to optimize the use and value of the Coop’s real estate portfolio.

  • Oversee design and construction of new stores and remodel of existing retail locations.

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Management, or a related field; MBA or equivalent advanced degree preferred.

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in a senior management role, preferably within the retail sectors.

  • Proven track record of successfully managing operations, driving strategic initiatives, and achieving financial targets.

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic, nimble, and entrepreneurial organization. A willingness and ability to test and learn and adjust strategies and tactics as needed.

  • Strong leadership and team-building skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate others.

  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.

  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Proficiency in using technology and data analytics to drive operational improvements.
